Garden International School Kuala Lumpur & Garden International School Kuantan provide one of the most comprehensive British-based international curriculum programmes in Asia. GIS is renowned for its academic excellence, being the largest private co-educational international school in Malaysia with over 2,200 students. Take a look at GIS' report of Academic Excellence here for an overview of results over recent years.

GIS is consistently ranked among the top international schools in Asia adhering to the international curriculum of England and Wales. The school bases its syllabus on the national British curriculum tailored to fit the global expectations of the international community. Garden International School (GIS) is the largest private, co-educational, British international school in Malaysia, with three locations, including a main campus in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, an Early Years Centre in Desa Sri Hartamas and another campus on the East Coast of Malaysia in Kuantan. In total, the school has over 2,200 students representing over 60 nationalities.

At GIS, our greatest asset is our students, and as such we create opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom – and with the support of our highly qualified and experienced multi-national teaching staff, we maximise the potential of each child.

GIS has a reputation for academic excellence, placing the success of each student at the centre of our mission. We understand that every student requires more than academic skills to succeed. Therefore we adhere to our Student Vision of developing adaptable lifelong learners, active citizens, effective contributors, resilient individuals, independent enquirers and creative thinkers.

GIS is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and has been teaching the British International Curriculum to both the local and the expatriate community of Kuala Lumpur since 1951.

GIS’ curriculum is based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales with varying modifications designed to meet the needs of international students. The British system provides a high quality and broad education which enables students to move to any other English-speaking country fully equipped to succeed.

Providing a holistic education from Nursery to Sixth Form, GIS taught a British based curriculum with an international flavour – preparing them for IGCSE, AS and A-Level examinations.

Upon leaving Garden International School, our 2013 graduates have obtained offers from their first or second choice university, a high proportion are studying at the world’s leading universities.

As a teacher, what are the major plus points for working here?
In my experience staff at GIS are very approachable and supportive of each other. Our students want to succeed and are very well behaved. My only criticism is that they can put a lot of pressure on themselves to get top grades regardless of the true ability and they can be a little passive in class (but this is becoming less so in recent years).

GIS has always sat comfortably amongst the other international schools in KL, especially with exam results. This has evolved more recently with the desire to producing more rounded students with plenty of community service opportunities and a CCA program, which is extremely vast. The pastoral system is increasingly well organised and central to our student’s needs.

GIS is currently seeking to re-brand itself as a top-tier international school (in other words the best in KL). This has resulted in what seems to be vast amounts of money being ploughed into the renovations to the school grounds (I used to find it a bit dingy), marketing and the long over-due school canteen which is currently being re-built and will be catered by what many expats believe to be the best restaurants in KL!

Professional Development opportunities have vastly improved from what used to be just requests to join working parties to biannual Performance Management Reviews, INSET being provided by some of the best movers and shakers in Education (recently Paul Ginnis) and plenty of opportunities to attend PM courses throughout SE Asia and beyond. GIS also organises plenty of twilight sessions to up-skill staff in many areas.
What areas do you feel are in need of development?
In GIS’ campaign to be the best, it has recently felt that any new initiatives that could be useful to the improvement being thrown at us without time to reflect, put into them properly practice and properly master. In short it is generally felt that more time should be spent doing less, well. An example of this is the immense drive for the use of technology (e.g. iPads) in class when wifi connection and ICT support having been not always reliable.
What advice would you give to other teachers considering working at this school?
If you have children (GIS offers free education for up to two kids in your family) then don’t think twice about the quality of education they will receive at GIS. As a parent myself I regard this as an excellent compliment towards the school. If you are ambitious then you have the potential to do very well here too and when it’s time to move on many former members of staff have gone on to promotions. Like any successful, big international school as a teacher there is an air of expectation of very high standards of teaching and learning and that you will put in lots of your extra time to support your students. As a result it vitally important to ensure you get a good work life balance. You can’t just rely on jetting off on amazing holidays around Asia during the holidays (although the location of KL and this being the hub of AirAsia does help!). Be prepared for hard work.

As a teacher, what are the major plus points for working here?
Garden is a very supportive school, with a forward thinking and dynamic faculty of teachers. Any good school is a result of good management, and the management at GIS provides a clear direction for the students, teachers and parents. There is a sense of purpose to the school both in its academic curriculum and its excellent extra curricular programme. Working at Garden stretches you as a teacher and encourages you to try new practise. Whilst pressure to achieve good results is there, it is not problematic and comes with the territory of working in a school of such regard. There are many opportunities here to get involved with things outside your subject area. The school has a host of responsibility positions and with the standard high staff turnover of a large international school, there is enough to go round. I loved my 7 years working at GIS and would fully recommend it to anyone considering applying.
What areas do you feel are in need of development?
ICT provision could be better supported and could be rationalised. ICT only really functions efficiently at a school if there is a high level of technical support.
