Qatar International School is an English-speaking private day school located in Doha, the capital city of the State of Qatar. The school follows the latest National Curriculum of England for students ranging between 3 and 18 years of age. Qatar International School was founded by the Owner Sheikh Ali bin Ahmed bin Thani Al Thani and the first Principal, Mrs Griffin in 1977, making it one of the first British schools in Qatar. From its very small beginnings nearly 40 years ago it has now grown into one of the largest and most successful schools in the country with nearly 1,900 students on role.
The school is led and managed by British professionals and it strives to maintain the highest standards of the current British Education system, whilst also supporting its Arabic culture and international context. Children are taught in Key Stages from KS1 through to KS5 and examinations are taken in GCSE, IGCSE and A Levels using UK examination boards. The vast majority of students leaving QIS move on to Higher Education in leading universities all over the world but most especially the UK, USA, Canada, UAE and Qatar itself. The vast majority of teaching staff are UK trained and the school prides itself on ensuring it keeps up to date with the best international practice in education and learning.
In 2001 the school moved to its current, purpose built campus in the Diplomatic Quarter of Dafna, adjacent to the impressive skyscrapers and business district of West Bay. Here, under the ownership of the founder’s son Sheikh Khalid bin Ali bin Ahmad Al Thani, the school continues to thrive, expanding and developing its excellent specialist facilities, which include science laboratories, ICT suites, a swimming pool, playing fields, and 2 large sports halls.
Our student body is truly international, with over 60 different nationalities represented within the current cohort. While the teaching staff is predominantly British and the curriculum is taught in English, the school is adept at integrating students from a wide variety of cultural and academic backgrounds. We hope you will enjoy browsing our website and we look forward to possibly welcoming you to the school in future.

As a teacher, what are the major plus points for working here?
Short day, lovely students, good work-life balance. The teachers are very cohesive and friendly and you will make some life long friends if you work here.
What areas do you feel are in need of development?
Pay is not the highest, but is still good. There has been a shift to get more bums on seats so the quality of student is in decline.
What advice would you give to other teachers considering working at this school?
I had a great experience but you can get a school with better pay and better accommodation -but with the extras come more pressure!

It’s nothing special
As a teacher, what are the major plus points for working here?
The work life balance is good. The hours are low relative to other schools. The holidays are very long. Its easy to visit different parts of the middle east from here.
What areas do you feel are in need of development?
The resources for the school are very poor. The school ran out of photocopying two months before the summer exams. This is very frustrating if you want the students to do well. There was very little professional development.
What advice would you give to other teachers considering working at this school?
The major issues of the school are pay compared to other schools. If you teach a core subject or a primary school subject you can do lots of tuition to make up for the lack of funds. The lack of resources for the students. Most of the single staff live together in a condominium. This can be fun but also end up like big brother where people argue too much. Living in doha can be a real challenge. You can have a quiet life at the school but if your going to the lifestyle hit, your better off working in a better paying school in my opinion.
